A few thoughts on death…

Back in 2004, I lost my girlfriend in a car accident.

I was shocked, devastated and felt confused for many months.

I was 22 at the time and I never thought something like that could happen to me.

Before that, I was the confident guy, succeeding at most things I started.

Then, suddenly, my life was filled with darkness and my family and friends couldn’t recognize me.

I tried hard to get out of that hole but apparently I wasn’t able.

That event changed me over the years and today I’m happy to say I accepted it 100%.

The best part?

I couldn’t say that at that time, but it’s probably the best thing that could happen to me. Truly.

It may seem narcissistic, but it transformed me in who I am today, more humble and more grounded.

That being said, I wish you one thing:

to spend quality time with people who are still in your life.

Deal?

  1. Being a fan of Washington Irving, his quote resonated with me. Thank you for this collection. I stumbled upon your site and read its entirety. My son killed himself in March. I do feel quite privileged to have had him for thirty years.

    1. Washington Irving was indeed a great writer!
Here are 2 quotes I truly like:
“Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them.”
“The natural effect of sorrow over the dead is to refine and elevate the mind.”

Also, sorry to hear about your son.
      Sending you the warmest thoughts.

      Regards,
      Maxime

  2. I wouldn’t lie

    Just before I die
    I’d probably cry.
    Yes! I wouldn’t lie
    With a terse, ‘goodbye’,
    Feigning completion –
    Full satisfaction;
    The long due demise
    Of a fellow, wise.

    Boghos Artinian

  3. Hi Maxime,
I am nearly 50 and have yet to experience grief. I found your quotes while searching for inspiration for a new school year for which I am characteristically unprepared. I like the ancient Egyptian test ‘Did you bring joy?’ and ‘Did you find joy?’ It seems to resonate more than ‘Did your pupils make 1.32 sub levels of progress?’ Thank you 🌟

    1. Thanks for your comment, David.
“Bringing joy” to others is indeed an important aspect of having good meaningful lives.

      Best,
      Maxime

  4. I am looking for a few lines, possibly written by Julian Barnes- the gist of it is, that death is there when we are born- & death asks Life to care for us, until it no longer can, & then Life returns us to Death’s caring & capable hands- does it ring any bells? It helped me a lot around the time of my cancer treatment so it was probably written between 2007 & 2010

    1. Hi Marie,
I’ve searched for it but couldn’t find anything relevant.

However, I’ve found a few gems from this author I didn’t know before.
      I thank you for that.

      Regards,
      Maxime

One small revenge might be to die and show no signs of having died. Julian Barnes

  5. Loved reading this collection. My partner died suddenly and unexpectedly 788 days ago.
Does it ever get any easier? I try and try but find nothing to make me want to live again and enjoy life…..

    1. Hi Lisa,
      I can hear your pain.

      Losing someone is dramatic.
I lost someone too in 2004 and it took me a long time to recover.

Make sure you don’t give up.
Life is hard, but in the end, it’s worth it.

      Peace,
      Maxime

  6. I read the entire collection and empathized with a lot of the quotes. One of them was from Esther Earl, a name I’ve never heard before. I looked her up on Wikipedia out of curiosity, and I teared up the moment I saw her pictures. It’s one thing to read the ruminations of a notable figure who’s been dead for hundreds of years, and it’s another thing to see it come out of the mouth of somebody from your generation.

Reading this has been a rather morbid but insightful experience. Thank you for putting this together Maxime.

    1. Hi David,
      thanks for your thoughtful comment.

I know it’s a deep subject, maybe taboo, maybe too dark compared to what we see on the Internet normally.
Yet, despite that, when I was creating it, I felt really happy and free.
Perhaps it’s a subject we should all become more familiar with, because we’ll all go there someday.

      Thanks again,
      Maxime
